Micro teaching

This is a Social Studies lesson on the topic tourism. The class in focus was a form three class. The main focus of this lesson was to higlight the advantages and disadvantages of tourism in St.Lucia through a series of activities. These activities were shared reading of a handout, completing a graphic organizer and putting together a short skit in groups. Please view this lesson and provide constructive critism. Let me know what my weaknesses and strengths are if any. Thnks in advance.

  2. I agree with Jeanne about the engaging nature of the lesson. Perhaps Jeanne could tell us a little more about the part of the lesson that she found interesting and engaging.

YOu did a fairly well job in teaching t the secondary level Craw, since you had previopusly taught at the primary level. i like the idea of the graphic organiser that you used and the double entry journal that students used to make some notes. I noticed that you made good use of the comprehension strategies that you have learnt in class. The reading/writing connection was evident in the lesson.
Additionally, i noticed that you encouraged students to read the prepared handout to identify the advantages and disadvantages of tourism - this was good. I really like the way you concluded the lesson; allowing students to present the advantages or disadvanages of tourism in a format of their choice is highly recommendable.

Let's see what the others have to say about the strengths in your lesson.

  3. As it relates to the weaknesses, i noted a few. In terms of planning, i noticed that your lesson plan was incomplete and not consistent with that prescribed by the Social Studies department. Objectives were not written as Knowledge, Skills and Attitude. other bits of information such as Method/Approach, materials, Grasde level, No of students, processes, generalisaion were missing in the plan. The introduction is the first activity and should not be part of the Development of the lesson.

in terms of the delivery you should have asked students to share their own experiences or opinion before asking them to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of tourism. And even prior to that you needed to activate their knowledge on tourism - who is a tourist; why do tourists travel etc.

the statement that you made to introduce the lesson was not effective _ "people make so much fuss about tourism" etc. You could have presened a scenario or an anticpation guide with statements relating to the advantages and disadvantages and allow students to agree or disagree before they read the handout.

    Any further comments?

  4. I know this was a challenge for you, howver I noted that you delivered very well. The activities were connected and engaging (the shared reading exercise). I really enjoyed them.
I also noted that, you like all the other students made good use of the graphice organiser. From these exercises I am sur that we all were able to note that is it a very simple yet profound way of having students represent text; it enables them to make a direct connection between reading text and writing text as students are given the opportunity to summarise what they read by highlighting the main points.

Enjoy what is left of the semester, study hard!
